- Presentation from Bill re carving
- Short presentation from Brad on Finishing frustrations
Spotlight on Safety
Any tips or near misses
Gary brought a piece of plywood that had been across the room into a piece of plywood from the table saw – not even sure how it happens – cutting thing pieces – using a push stick – fortunately not injured but if had been 6 inches over, could have impaled
Also a good reminder if you have somebody else in the shop, to not stand behind the tools
Program Update
Stephen – working on an Eastern Shore tour
- Hoping to be able to get to steam mill
- Possibly a member shop tour
- Calvin McKay creations workshop
Product review / questions
Brad not getting desired result so onders if perhaps not using correctly
Odie’s Oil – Recommended by Jordan Crowell swears by this project
- Penetrating oil
- Butter
- Wax
The jar gives little info – “use sparingly, buff on, buff off”
- Brad would not recommend using on floor – applied and finish didn’t last more than a few weeks on table with kids
- Followed up with Jordan and website, tried it again with more coats, more sanding in between coats – butter is supposed to reinforce
- Wood on coffee table is birch
Questions
Stephen – did you use sanding sealer?
Brad – no – sanded and old table
Dave – is this supposed to be like a Danish oil?
Brad – no varnish in this – just oil – but people use this on floors
Bill – How old is the jar? Was it hard to apply?
Brad – about a year – but hadn’t dried out, still easy to apply — looked great when I applied and buffed it
Dave: Could you have over-sanded?
Brad: Possibly
Dave S: How long did you give it to dry between coats?
Brad – usually 24-48 hours – website suggests at least 24 hours – and up to two weeks
Dave S – that is what I would expect for oil. Sometimes takes quite a while to cure
Doug – what as the table finished with before?
Brad – probably min wax poly – pretty sure that I scraped it all off but maybe not completely so that might have an impact
Stephen – have you tried pumice to rub it down
Brad- haven’t done that – does that appraise the surface?
Stephen – not as much as you might think – helps to prepare the wood for finish
Bill – have to be aware that might change the colour
Discussion on the floor – could not capture details
Brad summarizes maybe warming would help
Other suggestions:
- Reach out to customer service on the website(Mike)
- Sanalyn (sp?) in Burnside – they carry lots of finishes
- Sasco (Gary)Tom suggests resource Gary suggests Sasco as well for finishingStephen suggests reaching out to Steve LeBlanc
Presentation – Bill Howes – carving

In 1982 there was an article – legend is that the
Thought that it ould be fun to carve – did a sketch
(see presentation)
Ended up painting so now acrylic paint and stain and want to put finish but not sure what finish to use with that
Clamped up another board to carve – hard to carve the detail with the end grain, wood in a different direct
Used basswood but such a bland wood
Thinking of covering with a spray waterbased lacquer
Stephen – what about a spray-on shellac –bullseye has one – dewaxed – will go over pretty much anything but urethane
Gary – Sasco has a product for that too
Callum mentioned that his father had done a similar thing in basswood and ran into the same thing when tried to stain using walnut stain
