AGENDA

Safety Tips

Stephen – one reminder that occurred to me recently

Be sure at this time of year, reminder to do a good check of your collection system – without that, it can build up and mold can grow in there.  Was finding it really hard to breathe in the shop but gave that a through cleaning, vacuum – made the dust extraction system and saw work more efficiently and noticeable difference in the level of dust.

Glenn recently bought an overhead dust extraction filter and have been able to clean it out every day that I am in there and it has made a huge difference.  It is a two-stage filter that you can just take outside and blow out – and wife says that I’m not snoring as much

Calum – have also found that mold will sometimes appear on especially MDF unnoticed because it is on the back.  I have cloth filter on the collection system and notice that it was developing filter so replaced it – hadn’t realized how much it had become clogged up but with the new filter bag made an immediate and clear difference.

Project demonstration: Brad

bed – oak with ebonizing

Inspired by projects by:

Michael Robbins, Fine woodworking #275 (May June 2019)

Brian Boggs, Popular Woodworking,  Feb 10, 2021 (online)

Aside from the cost of shipping for the bark tan (Quebracho extract)  – item itself is not at all expensvie but shipping and customs added significantly to the cost   –
(if anyone else wants to try ebonizing, reach out to Brad for some bark tan)

Brings up the character in the wood.   Gorgeous on the oak.

Lumber came from Windhorse, hand sawn wood  – Windhorse no longer in operations

Wonder what kind of results you would get from a wood with more variation – like walnut from with wide variations in the heart wood and sap wood.

Presentation – Trevor & Stephen

Computer Numeric Control  (CNC)

Trevor Edis & Stephen Parsons
Start with history, evolution of CNC machine – controlled by computer that interprets toolpath design to make the correct cuts  – most typical now are 3 axs (north-south, east-west, up and don) newer ones now have 4th axis with additional tool heads /accessories

Changing the face of woodworking for many shop owners who have built their shops around CNC

Jonathan Katz-Moses has new approach (video of his new shop)

Demo – Shaper origin
