SHOW & TELL

Calum Ewing
Ewing_Composter (.pdf)

  • For a few years have raised chickens mostly for eggs
  • Produce eggs and manure – wet and heavy but needs to be composted before it can be used in the garden so a separate compost bin for the manure
  • Needs to be heavier than regular compost bin
  • Plastic in front of the frame lets excess water drain and supports worms / insects to get into the bin – half-lets with gap of about an inch to help drying – dried with skill saw and fine tuned with router – went together a layer at a time so tenons on center wall would fit in cut mortises
  • Top cut on only one side so flush to the top
  • Bottom of end walls galvanized brackets to prevent walls from sliding outwards
  • Instead of front edge – cleats for front boards, with small air space – front removeable and can add more boards on sides if extra height needed
  • Wood that lifts with slats
  • Layering manure with wood shavings to create air space and better mix
  • Stacking in fall should be ready to use on the garden beds by late spring, early summer

Question – do you use seaweed or irish seedweed

We don’t use it with the compost but do use it on the garden beds – just directly on the beds

Phil – we used to use the seaweed for planting potatoes – just a base of soil than cover with seaweed

Question – how did you decide on the dimensions for the project?

Basically as large as I could make from the wood that I had – 4×4 spruce / fir

Stephen – wonder if you might want to use hemlock – connect – with Ralph?

 Safety presentation

Anatomy of an Accident_w_annotations (.pdf)

  • First note – with COVID – we have had opportunity to pivot with new projects, commissions, online work but has also given us a chance to work on some new designs – instead of shows and shop tours, we’ve had a couple of galleries
  • On the other hand, this demand has created some pressure to produce – developing some services and classes
  • Drive for production and need a place to unwind
  • COVID has given a chance to work from home and other work
  • This week after a couple of long days, went out to the shop
  • Gripper slipped and started to tear up the rubber on the grip and I moved from the other hand to steady – keeping an eye o the top and missed that leading edge of the blade was already exposed
  • Contact was minimal and quick
  • Paramedics cleaned and gave a tetanus shot
  • Kept the nail bed but did cut through the distal phalanges
  • Doctor not a plastic surgeon so wanted

What went wrong?  What should I have done differently?

  • My first question – did I need to be in the woodshop at that particular time?
  • Maybe not at that time – lots to do in the shop that doesn’t really mean that I have to power up the big power tool
  • Grabbed a safety tool but it wasn’t the right tool – probably should have taken a featherboard and a push stick – would have kept hand farther away and sightline better
  • Regular clearance blade will be painted red to provide better signal that blade is close
  • Will help me to improve my own shop safety
  • Stay safe – and work through safety protocols.

Phil – had a similar problem – trip to emergency – even when you are doing something carefully and cautiously, when something goes wrong, you absolutely react on instinct and hard to avoid some issues

Brad – useful to have a humble look at why these things happen and how you can be most careful – fractions of seconds to respond – fast moving, powerful tools – can’t be too safe

Jules – Wondering if anyone open to having a tour with a group of kids to see a shop – gardens – would like to find places to offer

Will follow up with the SA and send messages to everyone

Stephen to create treasurer@atlanticwoodworkers.ca – will be redirected to Phil-  will allow you to make the deposits directly

Next Meeting

Virtual:  December 8, 2020

Next month would traditionally be the LV  Meeting and donations to SA

Stephen – would like to get a few models off to them

Option for an online ticket process or auction

Perhaps connect with the SA to see what needs / priorities are  – concern that we would have less of a contribution – encourage individuals to make something and pass it on

Brad will follow-up with SA – ME will send special newsletter by Nov 20 with membership info and SA updates.

[NOTE: No special edition sent – info outstanding]
