Lee Valley – pot luck treats / snacks

Meeting was changed to a different night and time to accommodate both Lee Valley and Salvation Army scheduling requirements.  A forecast storm front  and poor driving conditions reduced usual numbers for the holiday meeting

Welcome from chair

New Business:

  • Possibility of Rec NS Lottery ticket sales – we keep $1.20 of every ticket sold at $2. Rec NS manages licenses / admin. 
    • Prizes all outdoor rec packages
    • Could replace our monthly raffle for Jan – Feb.
    • No min commitment
  • Brad described his experience at the Dartmouth Market
  • Stephen told about market experiences with Seaside Christmas (Eastern Shore) and NSCC Leeds campus

Show and Tell (Salvation Army Toy Drive)

Stan

  • collection of puzzles made on scroll saw with Baltic plywood and ceramic paint

Stephen

  • truck based on C-Cab stake body – using a plan from Canadian Woodworking mag with modifications. From scrap bin – oak, cherry, birch, maple – bed removable – Tried & True finish

Mike

  • collection of trains (prototypes w 2×4) – found it worked best to stain and paint before assemble -used scroll saw to make wheels – used scrap, art paint and Tried & True – using patterns from scroll saw book but caboose was original design

Doug

  • ducks from Lee Valley articulate toys book – examples with hard wood and Tried & True and with painted soft wood, which he feels looks less finished
  • Trucks from 2x4s based on Swedish design – wheels all asymmetric – so always on a bumpy road – finished with Tried & True

Graham

  • Catapult received as Christmas gift (from LV) – assembled and donated

Bill

  • Crane kits and a box with instructions

Walt

  • Number of projects, pretested with daughter’s preschool class, included tow truck with picture hook for lifting, high chair for toys – all reinforced for strength; laundry basketball hoop – as usual, all upcycled / recycled. 

Don

  • Toy blocks from reclaimed yellow pine, natural, not painted – with container

Tom

  • Rocking horse
  • Animal carousel – with maple and beech
  • X&O set of spalted maple

Darrel

  • Doll beds (with dolls) – used to practice hand-cut mortise & tenon (40 M&T joints) – used salad bowl finish of bees wax and oil, applied oil before glue so glue doesn’t stick on oil

Raffle draw –

  • 2  x $25 gift LV gift cards donated by AWA
  • 2 wine stoppers turned / donated by Stephen Parsons
  • Prizes from Lee Valley that included : Long nose pattern marker, layout block, miniature honing guide, carpenter pencil

Although our numbers were down this year, still managed to collect $400 for our Salvation Army cash donation. Thanks to everyone for opening their wallets for a good cause.

Special thanks for the very generous donation from Rick Pehrsson, who contributed all earnings from snowman toy kits that he made and sold at Christmas craft fairs,  starting our tally with a $120 contribution.  Graham also made a generous cash donation to the funds.
