News

What is going on these days?

Gary – IWK have a woodworking program to build furniture and devices to help children with different needs – stands, bed lifts etc. – opening for almost 40 years as part of the rotary club – work out of wood room in IWK.  Get work order from OT or PT and come up with a plan.  Have developed a library of plans for common items.  Some people do woodworking and others paint, sand and finish.  Run by volunteers – Gary has info if anyone would like to learn more.

Jewels – friend is doing a workshop at Busy Bee on weekend – Stephen mentioned that there is a Winterlude sale at Busy Bee for a few days.

Stephen –

Jigs, Accessories, Tips & Tricks

Gary shared quite a collection of jigs and suggestions

  • 45 degree angle for making frames
  • Recommendation for glue bottle – icing decorated from Stokes
  • Ruler with a wedge on the back – just a scrap – super simple but makes a big difference for accurate marking and for picking up ruler after use
  • Making small boxes – mark shapes on plywood – put tape on the back, cut with router at 45 degree so doesn’t quite go through- cut away corners and fold box
  • Use washers of various sizes to mark equal distance from a mark – put a pencil in the hole and put against edge against of board and get the perfect distance to mark cut just outside line or to enlarge a plan by certain amount
  • Lift to hold up items in a vice – Phil says exactly designed like old carriage jack
  • 45 degree cutting jig – cut boards to length first – jig fits over fence, can keep blade straight and get the same consistent angle
  • Aside – fence from Steel City that is now back in business
  • Two side pieces when cutting off the top of a box with same side – box on each side, wrap with elastic
  • Curving jig – to make equal repeated curves – plywood good as more flexible – mdf sawdust centre – like lee valley bending jig – easier than the approach with string
  • For putting on handles correctly, drill one hole than put a marker, screw in the other hole and use it to mark starting hole for other size to ensure perfect fit
  • Cutting splines / dove tails box angles
  • Finger saver – saw stop for small pieces
  • Tapering jig — king’s woodworking taper jig (you tube) – used arborite because it was at hand but makes it easy to mark and clean
  • William Ng – had a wall with a selection of sand paper blocks already made out -use jig for folding and fits easily right out on the box – foam core board to form base of the sand jig
  • Drill press vice –
  • Small box vice for glueing up little boxes
  • wonky taker outer” if you don’t have large planer – can do a much wider board that you can do on a small joiner – put the wood on the sled and run both through the plane with adjustments where more needs to be removed – more ‘wonky’ areas
  • Floating tenon jig

Show and Tell

  • Walt – saw blade – son found old saw from playhouse 30 years ago and other son found one with quote – planning to mount together
  • Made stove for kids at the pre-primary – comes with pizza printed on paper and cookies, printed than put on plywood
  • Darrel – ships wheel clock made for sister at Christmas – made spindles and made pieces for spacers – lessons learned – spindles have to be truly square when  starting the project
  • Valentine’s project – made a little earing holder  – jig to equally space holes – gear with teeth and small hardwood with spring that comes from floppy discs
  • Stephen’s owls – and the jig that he used  SONCIK…  also beautiful candle holder with Valentine’s day message
  • Callum – clock- wife had requested clock – based on a small mantle clock – slightly bigger – coopered top – drawers to use as jewelery box
  • Tom – spill plane- taking spill to light a cigar – used a chisel for the blade – curls
  • Gary – small box out of a small piece bought from Rob’s sale – veneer as splines – wood may be wenge
  • Bill – urn – good friend had died and asked for a cremation box – size is issue – square inch / lb as guideline but actually bigger.  Wanted to make it bigger to fit the packaging – made bottom with pencil case finish with 3 visible screws – butternut -did have a beetle but adds character- can get rid of them by putting wood in an over for 2 hours at 450 degrees – carved letters after printing from computer
  • Brad – blanket ladder – sides cut as hexagons – cut first one with hand plane but not the rest – wish that I had let it acclimate in the shop more often – planed relief angle so it leans against wall – was sliding away from the wall  — really like working with cherry – finish beeswax and mineral oil.
  • Jack – rocking horse for granddaughter – birch plywood – picture – finish – wipe on poly varnish, high gloss – really fine sanding – eyes from Lee Valley – plan designed so can’t tip horse over

Summer BBQ

Want to give Ted and Debbie Monk a break from hosting so we are   looking for other options – thanks to Ted and Debbie for the great contribution over past few years.  Like to have a committee to look at options and make recommendations.
