Member Profile – Tom Patterson

Tom has been with the association quite a few years, serving on executive and on various committees over the years. For the past few years, Tom has led our annual recruitment committee to fill vacant spots on our Board of Directors and Executive and has always done an amazing job of finding the right people to fill the roles.

Here is how Tom answered our standard question list:

What is your occupation?    Retired Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union.

How long have you been a woodworker?   Forty-plus years.

What is your favourite tool?  ShopSmith Mark 510 – which is a table saw, drill press, horizontal drilling press, lathe and disc sander all in one. Additional attachments for the ShopSmith include a jointer, scroll saw, and a 1″ belt sander with a custom tool sharpening attachment.

What is your area(s) of specialty?   I have no particular area of interest or specialty. I’m a utilitarian woodworker who builds items as needed often when and where they will be used.

What is your favorite wood to work with?  I like to work with cedar, oak, and pine.

Tell us about your other interests.  My other hobbies include cooking, baking, and shopping at yard sales. I am also a member of the Nova Woodturners Guild.
