Business Arising
- Special thanks to panel members from last months meeting offering many ideas for making money from woodworking.
- Suggestion to consider strategies for reaching beyond Halifax since our mandate is to reach Atlantic provinces
New Business
- News on Stan Salsman email with health update. Wishes for good health sent on behalf of association
- Notice of AGM next meeting (AGM Mar 13/18) – thanks to Tom Patterson who will be convening and leading the nomination committee
- Jules has some tools (drill press, angle grinder) that she would like to find a home for in downtown Dartmouth where she might be able to use them on occasion. Alternately she would consider selling them. Anyone interested should talk with Julie at a meeting.
Presentation
Our February presentation was made by member Bill Howes, who shared his process for making Windsor chairs and brought two examples of his work.
Bill mentioned several useful resources:

- Curtis Buchannan – YouTube series of chair making videos
Some helpful tips
- Create story sticks for the legs and spindles and for where to drill
- It is easier to clam the seat to smooth sides before shaping the seat
- Back holes are drilled at 5-100
- Drill holes as guides for depth when creating contours; contouring of seat can also be done with notching chisel
- Best joint for Windsor chair is a straight taper. Since tapers are specific to one hole, it is crucial to march each one
- Use an even # of spindles or you end up with one right in the middle against your spine
- Old brown glue is good for doing back rails because you can boil or steam to remove ‘mistakes’ and redo

This month, our challenge was to include recycled, reused or repurposed component:
- Mary Elizabeth shared a gift made by Stephen – a turned seam ripper/awl made from antler shed (found shed antlers)
- Don – made a plant stand from recycled Russian olive in his yard; also shared a pizza peel and small bowl
- Darryl brought chisels that he made from a disassembled oak chair; a centering tool / compass from an old door jam; flowers in a temporary base from scrap wood collecting while travelling (the flowers are for a new vase that Darryl thought best to leave home, thus the temporary base)
- Darryl also brought a bird he bought in Aruba to show the craft – this colourful piece does not have any paint and is created exclusively with overlay
- Doug brought a 3-legged stool that he made for his wife with an update of how he finished it after bringing it to a previous meeting
- Stephen wrapped up this month’s show and tell with samples of his grill scrapers as well an iPod speaker
