Welcome AGENDA

No formal presentation but Stephen has two product reviews and demonstration.
Brad has some new tool presentations and newly finished project and seeking some style suggestions.

Stephen has a question and is also looking for some feedback

Spotlight on Safety

Brad had a bandsaw explode when it was not under extreme pressure

Others have had them fall apart at the seam

Observation from Stephen Parsons -seems more contained then other tools

Question – did the blade stay contained – it did but what a sound

Important reminder that you need to wear the PPE because you can’t always predict when something ill happen

Stephen mentioned a youtube video with discussion about the bandsaw that most likely to have an injury wrapping or unwrapping because people not likely

Calum, had an incident previously that blade stuck and was not broken but seriously bent – checking the blade realized that the trunnion below the table and shattered – don’t know if the blade breaked caused that or the trunions had broken and table shifted causing the blade to break.  Bought replacement trunions which have been more robust

Brad – still don’t know the cause so am more more cautious around the

New Tools

Product endorsement / new tools

Stephen in the shop – new video set up in the shop

Tonight – 2 toys that go with my table saw – new Woodpeckers tool – exact 90 mitre gauge and new Incra box  (Incra available at Lee Valley)

  • Woodpeckers exact 90 mitre gauge
  • Very useful when you need exact cut like on my chess board project
  • Just released by woodpeckers
  • I already had a decent mitre gauge that came with my sled, it’s not bad but can’t always cut on the 90 being always perfect for an exact cut, especially as it has a lot of play when in place
  • Not exactly a mitre gauge because it doesn’t cut mitres – it does one thing and does it very well – cuts a 90 degree from a referenced service very well, very exact
  • Advantages – long mitre bar and extra long fence – features leaf springs along the bar – keeps mitre tight into the fence – can adjust the tension on the leaf springs. Also has fit for tslot
  • The extra long mitre bar offers a number of advantages – like off table stops
  • Set up at factory to be exactly 90 degrees from head to the bar – did a test on 5 cut square and absolutely accurate – if necessary, there is a way to adjust but didn’t find any need
  • Couple of add ons including – flip stop is very solid and has micro adjustment for exact cuts
  • Ruler very accurate and allows extension past end of table – over 40”
  • One of the most interesting and valuable optionsis a little lift that keeps it steady with off table start
  • Perfect square every time – perfect for box making, fine work – anything that you want to be sure is square  – makes it much easy and saves time – already saved some headaches
  • Isn’t exactly a mitre but can be

Incra I box

  • This one designed to be used ith a dado stack
  • I have my favorite large box joint jig that I made from a pattern by Mathieas wendall -especially if complex or large but if I am doing small job or multiple cuts, this thing is a joy to work with
  • You can dial up the fit within the mitre-
  • Controlling the details of the cut and the size of the key really helpful – lets me get tight, consistent cut
  • You put in a test piece, make the adjustment for the cut and then just move it through
  • Really speeds up the process – just keep going to use up long strips of wood
  • You can also set it up to use the router table with a good router blade
  • Dead simple, dead accurate
  • Useful for strips, also for dental moldings
  • Instructions very comprehensive and lots of ideas

Question – cost?

The Exact 90 about $270 US – only available through Woodpecker

Inca from Lee Valley about $70

Ted – I use the Inca with the router and find that I get less tearout from it than on the table saw

Brad – reviews and new tool

Books by Mike Pekovich – highly recommend both

Exciting tool that has come into my shop – bevel gauge   – always useful

A new bevel tool – excellent, not loose very secure with angles
Chris Vesper – in Australia (maybe Melborne)

https://www.vespertools.com.au/

Flattening stone – my old one had a spot – replaced new flattening stone and made me realize how far out the flat the old one was – new flatting stone is Atoma 400 grit

Be sure that you replace your flattening stones, makes a big difference when you maintain your stones.

Dado tools  from Ted
Ridge Carbide tool – ridgecarbidetool.com

Calum shared a few of his recent finds with us

Angle-izer – made by general  (not General Tool which makes large tools)
https://generaltools.com/hand-tools/angle-izer-tools

All pivot points adjust – actually four rulers together – instruction booklet very detailed – lots of info

The other thing was the cheapest tool that I ever bought – silicon kitchen tools from the dollar store – works great for spreading cool – don’t even need to wash it out because silicone – can let it dry then move it around – got the idea watching a video

Busy Bee had large stop switches that fit into standard electrical box for easier action for switching on and off  – been switching standard

Show and Tell

Bill Howes – this year’s carving collection of Santas – favourite for 2021 was one with a mask

This one is a spin-off of Brad’s balancing wine bottle that he shared last month

Trying to figure out how to cut at 45 degree angle so put pieces on the side to make the angle with Forstner bit – made little triangles 3×3 cut to drill at an angle

Brad observed – Very ‘boring’ jig (drum roll implied)

Ask a member

Stephen – brought back our Ask a Member this meeting looking for suggestions on a challenge

Challenge that I have been having with chess boards – seriously warped chess board

Clamped to flat surface, left it for awhile  – between

        Discussion with lots of suggestions

Different direction of grain

Another substrate

Perhaps a different glue

Try putting some wet towels on it – Stephen – I did try after seeing similar suggestion on line – a little better but it was after that the crack appeared

Note:  Stephen will share updates, changes and results at future meeting

Program Update
