We had some technical trouble at the beginning and issues with the plan to switch to HOPIN as a new platform for meetings.  We moved to our previously-used Zoom link after a false start and a quick email.   Slightly late start but a relatively good turnout of people who stuck it out and got moved to the new ‘location’

Present – Phil Carter, Gary Dumas, Calum Ewing, Brad Holley (host), Bill Howes Ted Monk, Mary Elizabeth O’Toole,Stephen Parsons, Tom Patterson,  Dave Schlosberg, and Don Shabaly

Unfortunately, our planned guest was not able to join us because of technical issues of his own.  We’ll try to rebook him for a later meeting

MEMBER PRESENTATION

Stephen Parsons – Process and learning from Shoji Lanterns made with kumiko screens

Stephen will record and post on the AWA YouTube Channel and will  update at next meeting

Stephen  was inspired to this project from some of the work others in the group have done around Asian influenced pieces

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Thoughts on collaboration and working with artists focused on all media

Ted – mentioned an event in Saskachewan every 2-3 years where woodworkers get together with other artists — that might be an inspiration for a future collaboration challenge or even an event where art collaboration is created in real time

SHOW & TELL

BRAD – sister asked me to make floating wall shelf that she had seen on pinterest – wide shelf with a small ledge left for frame to lean—had done before but little by little on stable saw

  • Thought about it and realized that I had seen some wide rebates on jointer so tried that – unbelievably easy – had to give her the shelf to heer last week
  • Don – have done rebates on the jointer inadvertedly

Brad – provided a tool review of Sheartek blades – really nice finish – no tear out, a little snipe – quieter but still quite loud – quieter and produces better cut  – pretty pleased with it

tried to find local source for the blade – for my dewalt

Bought from sheartek – compared to busy bee – this one has 40 cutter bits, the one from busy bee has 30  – cutter blades are not here – they have to be installed individually once the bit is in place  – highly recommend snap ring pliers

With in place -bought set of 5 extra blades but didn’t know that it automatically shipped with 5 extra blades – upgrade thickness planer if a choice – you will see little streaks from the cut – but don’t get any tearout

Anyone else have sheartek tools?

Stephen – my brother has just replaced his as well and really really pleased with it.
Don – I have the same planer but haven’t considered the same cutter planer – have a backup planer for rough work like removing paint or suspicious that there might be nails

Stephen shared stand for wedding pic stand -adjustable thumb screw and finished

Calum – shared hammock stand that he made — all the stands seem to be about 110” long – made with spruce decking – not pressure treated – made it look a little like a boat in profile- on 4 feet so secure when on the deck – 2×6 blocks with braces in between – cut a slight curve – as big a curve as I could cut – – stuck in stainless steel and looked good when nobody in it but made an adjustment to put them to the outside face  for when someone using it  – comes apart, folds up for winter – stained – will live outside

Brad really like the look of the subtle curve on the bow and standard

Details from Calum:  5/4 x 6 decking – 3 layers to make uprights – 3” long blocks of 2×6 between the uprights

trial and error – build-as-you-go  approach
