Program Updates – Don Shubaly

Thanks to Callum for informative and detailed session.

We want to continue to encourage more members to offer presentations and/or lead discussions on various topics.  Contact Don to suggest an area that you would be willing to discuss for a 15 – 45 minute session.  If you are willing to lead or present but don’t have any ideas, check with Don for some inspiration.    He is currently hoping for a volunteer or two willing to talk about glueing and clamping for our April meeting.

Upcoming presentations:

FEB:   Don will lead a discussion on safety, including chemicals in the workshop.  He would like to have someone else present on finishing oils.

MAR:     March is our AGM, which will be followed by a shortened regular meeting.  We are going to try something new with a tool exchange.  You are invited to find things in your shop that you don’t or won’t use that might be of value to other members.  It might be tools, wood, resources….  But should be small and manageable.  We want to have things for barter, exchange, low prices so not big ticket items – More details to follow in the newsletter and at next month’s meeting.

Show and Tell

Stephen

Phil

  • Playing with turning from small pieces – bowls from apple burl, spalted maple and  spalted birch with bark
  • Shiny finish with 4 coats of tung oil with 400 grit sand between – shine usually starts to show after 3 coats

Bill

  • Working on re-handling chisels and decided to code the handles by using different woods for size (ex. all #3 sweeps are walnut and all #7 sweeps are ash) to make it easier to tell at a glance – used number punches to add numbers and created perfect balance for easy use (about event between the handle and the blade

Dave

  • Shared a magazine rack designed for a wall in a small room – use dowel centers after making a jig to simplify drilling holes in the rounded slats

Trevor

  • Brought samples of new work he is doing with full colour printer, permanent designs that are not easily scratched off or damaged.
