January 12, 2016 – South End Baptist Church, 60 Hastings Drive, Dartmouth
27 members and guests in attendance
Program
Our first meeting of the year started with a presentation from our guests Rob Pineo & Lisa Pavelak who spoke to us about their family business, The Hardwood Tree, in Cooks Brook, Nova Scotia.
Rob and Lisa shared some of the challenges and learning involved with getting their business launched over the past year. They built the millhouse and kiln themselves, with help from family – on land owned by his family since shortly after the American Revolution. In the spring of this year, they will be adding a woodshop to their operations. It is great to have a mill using responsible, sustainable practices so close to home. Thanks to Rob and Lisa for sharing their story with us. A trip to Hardwood Tree would be a terrific outing for our members.
Business & Reminders
- Welcome and overview
- Walt will be taking over registrar duties for Deb, who has other commitments at this time
- Neil is not able to continue as librarian at this time. Stephen is going to act as librarian in the short-term but we are still seeking a coordinator / assistant. Phil is going to coordinate a committee to review / cull / add books and update listings. Roy, Doug and Mary Elizabeth will help with that process.
- Gene has donated a digital reader with a value of over $150 US. It will be auctioned off on the website as a fundraising source. It will be listed for a week later in the month. An announcement will be sent to members when it is live. Thanks to Gene for his generous contribution.
- Table saw digital readout that will be auctioned on web site.
- Thanks to Gene for the donation
- Stephen and Gary are going to look at Power tools for sanding paper and discs and will make an order before the next meeting so people can purchase some of items that Kevin Power demonstrated at a previous meeting. A group order will allow us to save shipping costs.
