Nov. 2015 – South End Baptist Church, 60 Hastings Drive, Dartmouth (meeting postponed from usual meeting day due to election poll at church)
23 members and guests in attendance
Program
Our guest tonight was Kevin power of PowerAir Cleaning Ltd. in St. John. Kevin showed us some of his sanding and dust control tools, especially Mirka products from Finland. We were all impressed and amazed at the efficiency of the tools and at the lack of dust. There was lots of time to ask questions and try out some of the samples. It was a very informative presentation so thanks to Kevin for joining us at the meeting.
Kevin is in town regularly and willing to deliver materials or come to individual workshops for consultation. He can be reached at kdpower@rogers.com. He invited members to combine orders to take advantage of discounts and shipping savings. Gary and Stephen will coordinate a bulk order in the near future.
Business & Reminders
- Welcome and overview
- The auction for the AWA work bench is active on the web site. Members can bid by logging into the member section (if you have forgotten your password you can click on the Forgot Password link and you will receive a message about how to reset). Bidding closes on November 17. The winning bidder must remove the bench from the church by Nov. 30.
- Reminder about December toy drive. All members are encouraged to make something, even if 1 toy. Also, remember money for draw tickets / donation so we can try to top our donation record of $530 from last year
- Gary reminded people that show and share does not need to have been completed in the last month. Members are invited to bring earlier work that has not been shared.
- There will not be a weekend tool sale as we have had in the past. Experience has shown it is mostly members and not much attended by others so it has been decided that we will have a tool sale as a program at a regular meeting in May. Also, members are invited to bring up to 3 items for sale to any regular meeting.
- We are still looking for a member to volunteer as a new assistant or co-librarian, to help organize and catalogue books and especially to have library open at meetings and record circulation details hard copy at meeting to later be keyed into our new online library. In the interim, Phil is going to organize a session with Roy, Doug and Mary Elizabeth evaluate new books and review then catalogue any that are suitable for the library. They will also organize / categorize the books. David S. will provide leadership as past librarian.
Monthly Challenge / Show and Share
The challenge of this month’s meeting was to find or create examples Japanese shou-sugi-ban woodburning technique and/or bring a piece of fancy/unusual wood. There were only a couple of takers on the woodburning challenge but a number of people did bring in some unique pieces of wood. For most of them, people are still waiting for the materials to say what they want to become but there were lots of suggestions from the floor.
NOTE: Due to some technical difficulties tonight, pictures are not available for all show and share presentations. Thanks to all who brought something to share.
Next Meeting
- Tuesday, December 8 – at Lee Valley
- Monthly challenge for December: Toys for donation to Salvation Army – and don’t forget to bring money for raffle tickets or cash donation.
- The monthly meeting in December is a special one focused on donations for the Salvation Army so there is not a usual business meeting. Therefore, the January challenge is issued early (an extra month to plan, design and create). Monthly challenge for January: mixed media. Use wood and at least one other element in your work.
